In this post I would like to discuss the basics of dental implants.
Dental Implants were initially developed for the support of the dentures in the whole jaw. The advantages of the dental implants became immediately apparent and this technology was adapted for the replacement of one or more teeth. In today’s dental practice, implants are routinely used for the replacement of missing and hopeless teeth.
How successful are dental implants?
Dental implant treatment has a very high success rate. How high. We are talking about 95% success rate.
What are the Pros and Cons of dental Implants?
The main benefit of implant treatment includes cosmetic replacement of the missing teeth, restoration of the chewing function, and maintenance of the supporting jawbone. When patient loses a tooth, the remaining jaw bone shrinks over time resulting in a jaw bone defect. Dental implants is the only option which can preserve jaw bone over the long term. The disadvantages of implant treatment include high cost, longer treatment time, and possibility for surgical and prosthetic complications.
What is a design of implant restorations?
A dental implant is essentially a cylindrical screw made of titanium alloy which acts as an artificial root for the support of crowns, bridges, and dentures. Crowns and bridges are attached to the dental implants with a help of screws and dental adhesives. In case of removable dentures, the prosthesis is attached to the implant with a help of specially designed plastic or metal “clip” mechanism.

What are the other options in tooth replacement?
In addition to the dental implants, two other options in the replacement of missing teeth include fixed bridges and removable dentures. Although all treatment options present with advantages and disadvantages, dental implants are much better than fixed bridges and removable dentures. Dental implants is the only option which closely mimics natural teeth. In comparison to the fixed bridges, dental implants are more conservative and perform better over the long term. Patients accept dental implants much better than removable dentures because there is no need to wear a bulky appliance, which complicates speech and cleaning around the teeth.
